Attention Shoppers
Description: As artist-in-residence at Shaw’s supermarket in Gloucester, MA, I interviewed workers about their work and photographed them performing repetitive tasks associated with food distribution. Using the photographs as templates, I hand-carved selected images of employees into six Styrofoam trays used by the employees to package produce and meats. The carvings themselves reflect the repetitive, unseen labor of the workers, and touch on the idea that everyone’s work is part of a larger human system. Each tray was then photographed, enlarged, printed onto banners, and displayed in supermarket checkout lanes with accompanying literature about the project.
